As we welcome the students back for the 2015-2016 school year, I am reminded that a K-12 public education provides unlimited opportunities to all Greater Latrobe students. In addition, I know the education that a student receives at the Greater Latrobe School District is unique, rigorous, and assists with identifying the community in which it resides.
No Child Left Behind, initiated approximately 15 years ago, was the advent of significant changes in the manner in which success is measured in public education. Accountability for all, measured by universal state tests based on a standardized curriculum, assists in providing a balanced and thorough curriculum for all students in the state of Pennsylvania.
Greater Latrobe School District continues to meet our students’ needs through 21st century curriculum and teaching strategies. Technology plays a primary role in instruction, as we know our students from a very early age are accessing information using technology. We continue to be a leader in recognizing the need to provide access to all of our students.
STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education is the 21st century “buzz word” in educational circles. Simply stated, STEM addresses education policy and curriculum that improves competitiveness in science and technology development. Therefore, utilizing partial grant money, Greater Latrobe is partnering with Project Lead the Way to implement a K through 12 STEM focused curriculum. PLTW is one of the nation’s leading providers of science, technology, engineering, and math programs. Curriculum, professional development, and partnerships are all part of the PLTW program.
As we know, jobs in STEM related careers will grow 17 percent by 2018. The number of STEM jobs that will be unfilled by 2018 is estimated to be 1.2 million, primarily because of the lack of qualified workers. Our students need to experience courses that are reflective of this need, as well as expose students to as many careers as possible. Offering flexible and demanding courses will provide all students the ability to graduate with a career interest which is necessary in today’s rapidly increasing post high school options.
We recognize that public education’s community role is unlike the public education system in the early 1800’s in which Horace Mann worked. We believe, however, that the experiences that a student has in Greater Latrobe’s kindergarten through twelfth grade system, establishes all students the opportunity to pursue their dreams and reach their highest potential.
