What: Students will be able to explore the telescopes on Mauna Kea.
How: I will show the students a PPTX on Mauna Kea, adaptive optics and radio telescopes.
What: Students will be able to describe the astronomical technologies of the late 1800’s.
How: We will hold a brief discussion on telescopes followed by viewing approximately 20 minutes of “Journey to Palomar”. We will then discuss Hale’s 40” telescope at the Yerkes Observatory.

What: Students will be able to explain why the size optics matters when it comes to telescopes.
How: Students will view 30 minutes of “Journey to Palomar” centering on the funding and construction of the 100” Hooker telescope. Class discussion will follow.

What: Students will be able to understand the important changes that Hale brought about in the
science of Astronomy.
How: Students will view 30 minutes of “Journey to Palomar” centering on the construction of the 200” Palomar observatory and Hale’s motivations. Class discussion will follow.

What: The students will be able to identify the parts of a telescope.
How: The students will complete a chart on the parts of a telescope and their functions.
